Renewable Energy

Wind and sun. Plants and water. There are a number of resources that are automatically replenished by nature and can be used to generate power. These sources, known as renewable energy, are designed to help sustain the environment, but require our investment to reach their potential.

Help Power the Growth of Renewable Energy

Buying renewable energy benefits both the environment and your organization.

Environmental Benefits

  • Cleaner air. Renewable energy offsets carbon dioxide and other emissions from conventional power plants
  • Support for the conservation of non-renewable fossil fuels - oil, coal and natural gas
  • Improves energy diversity, independence and sustainability

Benefits to Your Organization

  • Support for your business' social and regulatory goals
  • Environmental leadership positioning
  • Enhanced employee morale

Invest in Renewable Energy

Your organization can play an important role in supporting renewable energy by purchasing green products like Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Hess.

When you buy a REC, you are investing in the future development of renewable energy sources, and making a commitment to support greener sources of power. The purchase of renewable energy is completely voluntary and does not affect your electricity service in any way.

RECs enable you to support renewable energy

A REC represents the property rights to the environmental benefits derived from electricity generated by renewable sources. By purchasing a REC, you are increasing the amount of renewable energy supplied to the power grid. The chart below illustrates this process:

The Green-e Program certifies that the renewable energy you purchase meets strict environmental and consumer protections standards established by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions.

EPA Green Partnership

Your organization’s green power purchase can range from 1% to 100% of its electricity usage. If your contribution falls within the requirements listed below, you will qualify for the Green Power Partnership, offered by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Your Organization's Baseload EPA's GPP Program Requirements
If your annual electricity use in kilowatt-hours is... Minimum Green power purchase within one year of joining the GPP
100,000,001 kWh or more 2% of your annual usage
10,000,001 - 100,000,000 kWh 3% of your annual usage
1,000,001 - 10,000,000 kWh 6% of your annual usage
1,000,000 kWh 10% of your annual usage
